Treatment II

After thinking about the short film a little more, i have decided i would like to use a mixture of stills and moving shots. The things i need to thing about at the moment are:
. Where i will take the photo/video's
The shots of the photographer will probably be taken against a blank wall, and will be taken from straight infront of him, effetively the view of the model.
The shots of the model will be taken on what looks like a studio but will use a lot of macro shots of her lips, eyes, hands, shoes etc
.Who i will use in the short film
I want to make sure that the photographer is a man and the model is a younger girl, i'm still deciding on whether there will be an extra person or not for the twist.
.What the twist at the end of the story will be.
possibly that they're in totally different rooms, or something that means that she s not a model.
.How long the film will be
around a minute to two minutes.

Treatment

For my short film i want to base the look of the film on 'The Gift' By Markus Wambsganns, with two seperate moving images at the same time which relate to each other. The film will last around two minutes , i have the idea of a photographer on one side and taking photo's , the shot of the photographer would be facing him/her. and the other side of the film would be the model for the photographer, and i will use alot of macro photography. the only sound in the film will be of the photographer snapping photos. The narrative of the story will be portray a relatively normal, calm woman and will end in a twist that contradicts that perception.

Reebok Freestyle Global Stylist Series – Hong Kong BY EUGENE KAN (Research)

After looking at photographs which simply use bright colours, i found this series of photographs by Eugene Kan who has done some photography for Reebok. But i chose to look at these photo's because of the way they have been sort of cut and re-arranged , it produces really interesting work and aswel as looking at Nabil's work i would like to have a go at this sort of photomontage idea.

Nabil Elderkin (Research)

www.nabilphotography.com

Nabil's work has given me some really interesting ideas. his work moves away from simply being fashion or staged photography and starts to present a story. The way his work is presented links his photos together to create a story or an insight into someone's life. There are a series of photo's of Vinnie Jones on his site and in four photos , the angle of the shots he uses, and the tone of the photographs sums him up in seconds. I'm going to have a go at presenting photo's in a similar way.

Some Studio Photo's

Special Ten Analysis

The Shovel
Short Film
Directed by Nick Childs
Produced by Nick Childs & Steve Hardwick

www.theshovelmovie.com

Technically, in terms of shots used this film was not particularly special but what really set this short film apart was the story line. it was only until the last 10 seconds of the film that you knew what had happened. The film made you think a number of things and a range of emotions which is exactly what a short film aims to achieve. There were a number of times that the shovel was emphasized and it was the only thing that linked all the people in the film. You are persuaded to believe something which isn't true and this is an aspect i definitely need to consider if i am to make a successful short film.

The Gift
Short Film
Directed By Markus Wambsganns

I really loved this short film, the attention to detail made the film really interesting. The twist in the story line made the short film so interesting. The connection between the two different shots on the screen was fascinating to watch, and emphasised th epoint that theres a story behind everyone. a lot of macro photography was used on the right and the shot on the left stayed much the same. The voice of the narrator made the story seem quite relaxing and ordinary even though the ending was far from ordinary. When making my film i would really like to use the same structure of having two moving shots on the same screen.

Digital Toning

Create mono toning effects;

i created an adjustment layer and selected Hue/saturation & making sure that i ticked the colorize box. i used '30','30' & '0' in the bar that came up to create a sepia effect. Although a very simple process i really like the outcome of the photograph.

Increase saturation without blocking out colours

I created this image by creating a new layer and copying the same image on top of itself. I then used 'Gaussian blur' & entered a radius of around 5 pixels.
i changed the blending mode by selecting normal in the layers palette and then chaning it to color
i used Ctrl U to edit the saturation slider. I can see how this process could be really useful to me as alot of fashion phootogrphy is really bright and colourful so i may use this process again

Changing colours of individual items 3
i changed the colours of the photo by creating a new layer , slecting areas with the lasso tool and then changing the hue and saturation in the photo, mainly in the face, eyes and more noticably the t shirt.

Light Photo's

a key aspect of fashion and staged photography is the lighting used, i experimented by using a flashing blue LED light and using a long exposure. i quite liked some of the outcomes and altered them on photoshop. The top photo is made of two layers and simply burning certain parts of the face to make it stand out more. The second photo has just had an adjusted contrast to bring out different colours in the photo. I quite like these outcomes but they are a little dark and not particularly in focus.

Short Film Research

After a little research i found a man called Chris Milk, and in particular this short film really interested me. The camera work is really fast, colorful and exciting. And although it is very short, the way he summarizes parts of his life so quickly is really impressive. I found his profile on www.Vimeo.com and the caption for this video was a man's life flashing before him.

Short Films We Watched

Short Films

'About a girl'. Brian Percival (2001)

This was very cleverly shot, as the camerman constantly moved the camara around the girl walking. The scene could have been very dull and ordinary but Brian Percival moved the camera at different distances to the girls face to make the film more exciting. Technically, he started by walking with the camera which gave a shakey aspect to the film and it felt like you were walking with the girl. As the film progressed he used a trolley to make the film much smoother. At the very end of the film, when the baby was left in the canal, a few different shots were used, firstly a shot from under the water and this was done in a swimming pool hence the scene seemed slightly too bright. There was also a panning shot of the water and a crancxe would of had to been used for this. As a story, the film was really interesting, the girl who was portrayed as being very innocent and young actually was carrying the burden of a dead baby yet she showed no emotion. She seemed quite distant from her family and closer to her friends who were also portrayed as very innocent, it was clear that she had told noone about the baby. Visually, the mood and lighting of the inner city was purposefully very dull, dark and dreary and in contrast when she went into the expensive perfume shop it was very bright and colourful. I found this short film really interesting and theres aspects of the film i can take into consideration.
'Boy and Bicycle'. Ridley Scott (1958)

This was Ridley Scott's first short film and this was clear by the very experimental shots her used. He said that he sat in the back of hsi fathers car to film the boy on the bicycle. I liked the fact he used black and white film, it gave a real sense of contrast between light and dark especially in his bedroom when there was the window as the only light source. Visually, it was interesting to watch with so many different angles but as a narrative the story had no real purpose or statement, the boy missed school but that was about all. I think the main purpose of the film was just to experiment with different ideas and some of them worked and some didn't. i particularly liked the shot of the bike wheel, it was really interesting how he decided to shoot the film from the ground looking up through the bike wheel at his face.
'Terminal Bar'. Stefan Nadelman (2002)

In this short film i felt that the narrative was not as strong as about a girl but i really liked the idea of making a film out of totally using still shots. Some of the photo's that Nadelman had taken , for example, of the drug dealer and the dirty street life around the bar. Technically the film would have been fairly easy to make as all he had to do was arrange stills but the actually photos he took were technically quite good, it wasn't obvious that he used and special equipment. I found the film interesting from the idea that the photo's he took had to tell a story, which meant the photos needed to be really strong and had to relate. I really liked the way he had taken so many portrait shots of differnet people from around the bar and in black and white. The photos were arranged in the film really well i thought and the way he commented upon different faces made the film into more of a story than simply a gallery of his photos. I would like to take the idea of taking alot of photos of differnt faces and putting stories to them.
